bexbex
My son and I went to get some mealwoms last week from a pet shop. They breed lots of critters there to feed to reptiles and the likes and my little boy loves feeding the chickens a mealworm treat When we got the mealworms the man asked me what size I would like (!) I didn't realise they came in sizes so went for a medium size and they were like the dried ones you can get. My little boy is very eager to give the chickens a giant one, and they are giant! Slug size! I wanted to know if any of you had fed them to the chickens before this size? I've read a few conflicting opinions about them, including that when fed alive they can start to eat the chickens insides! (but I read that about the smaller ones too...) If I didn't feed them alive I was thinking of freezing them to kill them and then defrost them and use as a dead treat... how gross... lol, with the size of them the chickens could probably only have 1 each. Opinions? hehe Becki x
debbier
I know the ones you mean. Though I've not given any mealworms to my chooks (I'm spending enough on them as it is!), we used to give them to my daughter's gerbils. They used to bite the heads off before swallowing them, and made a quite awful crunching noise, but boy did they like them.

Surrey Hen
My girls love the live ones from Wiggly Wigglers - gross I know. I bought some bigger ones from an online supplier and they turned out to be over an inch long and came in a newspaper stuffed canvas bag. For some reason they freaked me out so much more than the little ones in pots of bokashi. They were cheaper and bigger but I'm afraid I'm sticking with the Wiggly Wiggler variety - I know - I'm a wimp. The Dogmother
Has anyone else fed their chooks on the maggots when they hose out their wheelie bin? Tip from a friend this week. Dunno what the maggots are in there for - I never put food waste in the bin.. we don't have any food waste.
