Milly very, very poorly. What to do?

Recommended Posts

We took delivery of Molly (Miss Pepperpot) and Milly (Gingernut) just over two weeks ago.

Now this afternoon Milly has become increasingly poorly. She's yet to lay her first egg so at first I thought she might be egg bound. Checked her vent, felt in all the right places but no nothing. We cannot find a 24 hour vet in our area so at a loss as to what to do. We've now put her in a comfy box in the house to keep an eye on her. She looks very pathetic can hardly keep her eyes open and lost all her energy. Any ideas please. (red eglu)GNRPP:(

Hello, what a horrid start. :( I think she's best kept quiet as you are doing and see how she is in the morning then check her over for anything unusual - breathing, nose, crop, skin, tummy, vent, belly, poo and eating.

She may be starting to lay, some get wonky eggs for a while which makes them hunched, fluffed up and withdrawn so you may find an egg in the morning. I hope so. :D

It may possibly be a soft shelled egg  (these are quite common at the beginning of laying), they do make a hen appear in a "daze" for several hours until the softie is laid.

However she does sound poorly, if she is still the same in the morning I would suggest a trip to the vet.

Try if you can to keep her hydrated.

Hope she perks up soon.
