Old Speckled Hen
Has anybody ever tried this. When do you plant it? It's very wet here in Cumbria, would it survive here? Thanks a lot
Tara.F
hmmm.... do you mean Elephant garlic? Elephant garlic is actually a type of leek...not really garlic at all It will grow pretty much anywhere. If you are worried about the water, put a handful of grit beneath each planting. Split into cloves in September and plant as you would garlic. Some say just beneath the surface...some say leave the pointy bits just showing. net if possible for the first couple of weeks to stop birds pulling them back up before the roots establish Next June you'll have a great big bulb for each clove you planted. Bulbs are delicious roasted...they have a mild, sweet garlic flavour. Remember to keep some back for planting next year....you should never need to buy it again! google the Isle of wight garlic company for lots of information and recipe ideas
Valkyrie
I haven't tried the elephant garlic, but the Isle of Wight company often goes to farmers markets and sell the cloves for planting as well as other produce, so we got ours from their stall. I certainly recommend them - we have had huge cloves this year. Some small ones too, but much better than I have had from other sources.
