maggots in my plums :(

Recommended Posts

We noticed that a couple of our plums were ripe and went to eat them, bit one in half and there are pink maggotty things in them. :(:vom:

Has anyone any idea what they are and how to prevent them. We have loads on the tree and most of the ones we have looked at so far have them. I will probably cut the plums up and cook the good bits but it is such a shame.

I was given a load of plums that were very maggoty. I covered them with water first to rinse off any loose ones, drained them then stewed them with just a little sugar until the skins were falling off but they were still firm. I went through every one splitting them open and removing the stone, maggot and skin, then strained the juice back into them and jammed them. I still managed to get one maggot float to the surface when I started the jam process, but am reasonably confident that I got them all :D Anyone for a jam butty? 8)
