FoxFighters
Can anyone offer a numerically challenged 30 something some advice? Got my Flubenvet and ready to go and worm my two chooks! Problem is I can't get my head around the dosing advice. The scoop provided doses about 10kg of food, or at least more than my two will eat in 7 days! Shall I just bite the bullet and dose too much and then throw away the surplus? I've read that some people seem to put it onto grapes etc, but how on earth do they get the dosage right? It would be easier to chuck it on some sweetcorn - at least they'd eat it!!!! Any advice, hints or tips very gratefully received! Redwing
I would reduce the quantities accordingly eg a quarter of a scoop to 2.5kg pellets, if you have some digital kitchen scales they will sort it out for you otherwise measure out a scoop put it on a chopping board and use the edge of a fork to divide it up roughly Add the settled upon dose to a scoop of pellets add a tiny drop of cod liver oil (or olive oil etc..) and mix well - a plastic milk bottle is good for the mixing, just shake it up! then add that mix to the rest of the pellets and mix well If you don't make up enough you can mix more, if you make up too much discard it at the end of the 7 days Personally I don't do the grape method as the medication is designed to be absorbed throughout the day and theres always one chook who gets two bits! Chucky Mama
OK guys, I see the query re Flubenvet popping up all the time so I have today spoken to my contact at Janseen - the company that makes it. This refers to the 1% Flubenvet. The grape method - whilst they are aware that it is used, it is not recommended. This method came in before the new 1% Premix was developed. I am told that the Flubenvet needs to be given over the day for a week and so a medicated grape is not ideal. The dose as it says in the box is 6g (1 scoop) per 2kg of feed. So - work out roughly how much feed your chickens will eat in 7 days and medicate that amount of food and feed them from that food for 7 days. e.g if your girls pack away 2kg of food in a week. Add 1 scoop to it, mix well and keep in a tub, feed from this tub for 7 days. 4kg of food, 2 scoops and so on. The key is in the mixing. Mix really well. A small amount of oil can added to make sure it sticks to the food. The chickens that eat the most will be heavier and therefore will take more medicated feed. I hope that this helps
Chicken Licken
I just did the maths out of desperation. It says 100Kg of feed needs 240g, so 1Kg needs 2.4g. As I don't have a set of whizzy scales I looked up weight conversion to teaspoons on the internet and 1 tsp dry weight = 4.6 g. I have just mixed 1/2 tsp of flubenvet intermediate with my layers mash and bokashi mixture and replaced all the feed - hope I got the maths right and it works
