Weve heard of people using shredded paper in the hen house and we have plenty that comes out of our cross cut shreddder. My worry is that it might be too dusty. Am I worrying about nothing? Any advice welcome please.

I dont mind if they eat it, I am worried the dust might be harmful to their breathing though chickens seem to be pretty hardy little devils!

i was worried about impacted crops. aubiose, which we use, seems quite dusty but they've been ok, try the paper and monitor them?

I'm using Newspaper.......IT'S FREE

Hi, we having been using cross cut paper for 2 yrs now with no trouble. Suppose just like the garden plants it's chicken specific, they either will eat it or they won't. Give them a try and see how they go.

Wow, Thanks guys, really useful stuff, I wont worry about using shredded paper which I can produce loads of. When it comes to it I'll try the girls on shredded paper before we try straw or hay.

I use cross-cut shredded paper in the nesting boxes - it doesn't seem dusty and it gives me pleasure to think of some of the documents in particular being put to use in this way .

 

Likewise, it cheers me up when the chickens poo on particular pictures (mainly politicians) in the newspapers which I use on the floor of their house

I echo what Cluckbok says, it is chook specific.

 

I tried shredded paper only one of my 4 chooks ate it. The other 3 ignored it. Unfortunately I had to stop using it as the one that was eating it, wasn't just nibbling, she was eating loads. So I stick to Auboise horse bedding now (which does have better aborbancy for when they poo in the nestbox).

 

But you are best to try shredded paper and see how you get on.

Hi Hen Watch. Thanks for the information. I will give it a try and keep an eye on the birds to make sure "Ooops, word censored!"ody tries to convert to the 'shredded paper diet' I'll check out that Auboise horse bedding as well.
