chixandthecity
Hi there Haven't posted on here for a while but wonder if anyone can offer advice about my hen, Poppy. She's been lethargic since yesterday and this morning she's just standing in one spot with her eyes mostly closed. On closer inspection, one eye is weeping a clear goo and looks swollen. Think the other one is okay (no goo anyway, but possibly a little inflamed). She's not herself at all. Called the poultry vet and he is going to prepare an oral antibiotic for me to collect later. It's hard for me to take her to the vets today as I don't drive and have no one to give me a lift but he was happy to let me collect the medication and see if it does the trick. any advice in the meantime would be great! Thanks Chix
Egluntyne
I would bathe it with cold tea. It is very soothing and is mildly antiseptic. You can use bog standard infected eye drops, but they are *not licensed for use in poultry in UK.
iar fach goch
one of our girls was the same earlier this year and I followed Egluntine's advice and she was as right as rain within a week - the pharmacist was most amused to find out that the eye drops were for a hen! chixandthecity
Hi there Thanks for advice Vet has given her a 5 day course of Edroxil (same as Baytril apparently) which we syringe into her. Started on it yesterday afternoon and had second dose this morning. Eye is looking better although still a bit puffy and her comb is back to normal colour but still quite floppy. Lethargy wise, she's much the same as yesterday. If you put her down in one spot, she'll remain there. She is drinking a lot and eating a little today, but definitely not right still. Vet said would see improvement within 2 or 3 days if the Edroxil is going to work, so will wait and see. Chix
chixandthecity
Just to let you know that Poppy died yesterday. She didn't come out of the Eglu on Sat morning and when we removed her she couldn't stand or open her eyes. Put her in a box away from others and she didn't move at all from the position we placed her in. It was pretty obvious what the outcome was going to be, but we dutifully syringed another dose of antibiotics into her. Anyway, we just let her be really and by yesterday morning she was all but dead. My OH put her in a plastic bag and sealed it up just to put her out of her misery (she was barely conscious and breathing very lightly at this point). Goodness knows what was wrong with her. She seemed fine until last Weds when she was a bit lacklustre, then Thursday just stood in one spot, drinking a lot and we noticed her eye was inflamed and weepy. Not much change on Friday. And then Saturday she had gone right downhill. It just seemed odd that she couldn't bear her weight or open her eyes. Chix
