Chickens not laying

Recommended Posts

Hi had the chickens a few months now, wormed them, given them all the cider vinegar, mite powder etc, but for the last 2 weeks only one bird out of three has laid, now although they are a pet I do want them to lay. How long would you leave it before you considered them for the pot? (in the nicest possible way) And have I missed anything

When did you last worm them? I do mine every 3 months. Have you checked for lice/mites? Mine stopped laying recently and I discovered they were eating the eggs  . (It doesn't sound like yours are doing that though.) If you've ruled out all possible causes, you just have to accept that sometimes they just have a break for no apparent reason  .

wormed them 10 days back, had onw white egg today so one is back on form :D , just got hold of the brown hen dipper as her bum was really dirty so just gave her a good clean, they have just started using the dustbath so hopefully we have turned a corner, all in the last 24 hours, maybe I should moan more :)

It's amazing what showing them a packet of Paxo and a roasting tin can achieve!!

If you were seriously considering eating them you might find they're already too old and tough if they're laying. Also, you could try cutting back on treats if they get lots - fat hens don't lay and they might be stuffing on titbits and not eating their pellets.

Hope you are inundated with eggs tomorrow (if it's any consolation my 14 laid none at all two days ago, five yesterday and 3 today :wall: - they do it on purpose!)
