Hens pecking at me constantly............how to stop!!

Recommended Posts

Hiya, i have 2 isa browns, got them bout 3wks ago & they have taken to me quite well :D

I sometimes feed them treats from my hand so i'm well aware that they see me as food but when i have no food they constantly try to grab my hands & fingers & although its not that sore now (their about 23 wks) i imagine it will be sore as they get older. Any suggestions on how to deal with it.

Thanks for any help

Hi,

I know it sounds a bit stupid but have a go at not hand feeding them for a while.

When i first got my girls i let them feed out my hand for 2 days then had to stop as they kept pecking my hand when i went out to fill up their water or to clean them out (they kept thinking i had food in my hand)

Hope this helps,

Raina :D

I've had the same - my favourite girl pecked my arm whilst I was hanging a pecka block - think she confused me with the pecka block. Anyway my arm had a 2 inch black (literally!) bruise - it hurt :(

Some of them also peck at my wedding ring and when I grab some corn as a treat they have been known to try to jump on my shoulder or any part of me they can land on.

They are certaintly eager!

I agree with the rest its likely hand feeding that's the reason and stopping this for a few days or throwing it on the ground should get them out the habit.
