Baked's eggs - hard in the morning then a softie in the pm

Recommended Posts

Our two lovely girls have been with us for two months and are nicely settled into their laying routine. However, Baked has started laying softies following on from her normal egg in the morning. We've just let them out for their afternoon run and out plopped another one. She's been doing it for about a week now so I'm not sure what I should be doing. They have pellets and grit, which is obviously enough for the morning egg, but not the afternoon one. Should she be laying two a day?! They are rather spoilt and have a lot of treats, so is this causing it?

It was funny watching her doing it though - she swelled up to about twice her normal size and looked like a feathery football!

Help!

This can be normal in young hens as they start laying and their systems get into the swing of things. My newest chicken has been having softie issues. Last week we had no softies and I thought she'd 'grown out of it' but we are back to it again  The pellets and grit should be all they need...

Giving too many treats causes problems. They really only need to be given pellets, water, greens and grit. The pellets contain all they need to lay good eggs, when we give them other things (we think we are being kind - and we all do it) we are upsetting the balance. Make sure they only have pellets during the day and sprinkle a little corn for them late afternoon.

Hope things work out.
