Limping Hen

Recommended Posts

Hi I am new to the forum so all advice gratefully recieved. One of my ex-bats, Onion, has been limping since monday night. We think she has caught her leg in the mesh of her run when a little excited.

She can put her weight on it and doesnt lift it up more than the other. She does walk very flat footed though - when she picks uo her foot she doesnt clench her toes like her other foot. I have checked her pads/toes and all OK. No wounds. When you touch her shin though she does retract it but not with sound of pain. She still runs around albeit with a bit of a gait. Eating and drinking ok.

It has improved slightly but I just want to check if there is anything we can do. She has been resting in her run.

Is it just a matter on time or should I take her to the vet? I dont think she has broken anything.

thanks :?

Hello & welcome to the forum! :)

I've got a limping girl at the moment too :( Like you, I can't see any wounds and am sure there isn't a break but as she's been prone to laying a few softies, I've been putting a teaspoon of limestone flour in their porridge every day- I've upped their rations to two lots of porridge a day too as I'm desperate to see an improvement- hope I'm not overdosing them...

I'd read in the FAQ's that limping can be caused by a calcium deficiency and that limestone flour can help.

There's not much improvement in my girl yet though- here's hoping we both get someone more knowledgeable with some advice soon! :)

Glad it is not just me :)

Onions eggs have all been good so I think she has just banged her leg. It is just a shame as she was zipping around the garden in the morning but by the evenign she had this limp. Nearly cried. I am sure she is fine and I am just being a mother hen.

I hope your girl gets better soon, sounds liek you are doing a good job with her. Fingers crossed!

My new girl, Poppy, hurt her leg the first night I had her  . She fell flat on her face if she tried to walk and curled her foot up even when she sat down :( . We brought her in the house in a box and within one day she was back outside, walking gingerly and within 3 days was totally back to normal :) .

Her whole leg was cold to start with which worried me but it soon got warm again and there were no visible signs of injury.

Fingers crossed your girlie recovers just as fast :) .

I have one too! Poor Henrietta GNR is just the same! She runs with a wobble, although her walking is not too bad. She's my favourite girl so REALLY hope she'll get well soon

Was ready to race off tomorrow to purchase the Limestone flour but may give her a few days to see how she goes....
