Prompted to post this as I saw someone else in Scotland looking for a POL Cream Legbar and I knew where to get them, so I'm hoping someone out there can help me find some proper chocolate brown egg laying Marans in Scotland!

 

(I've tried everyone who advertises here and don't want to get eggs as I only want two hens and don't want to discard any hatched cockerels. I've also placed a couple of online ads with no response ...)

You could try George Ogilvie at Ballencrieff Mains Farm. I recently got a Mendlesham Blue and a Cuckoo Maran who I thought would lay dark brown eggs although I've since been told she's a hybrid/Speckeldy and won't . Playing the waiting game now .

 

If you can wait till she lays I'll tell you what colour they are and you can pick one up too . He had quite a lot of them!

They should still be darker eggs than normal ANH so don't despair yet!

Thanks for this. I have actually contacted George Ogilvie, but haven't followed through because he said they were hybrid and not pure bred Marans.

 

I would really like to have some glossy dark brown eggs in our mix!

Even with a pure breed there is no guarantee. I have a Barnebar and she was meant to lay dark brown eggs. She laid her first egg on the weekend and its a standard brown colour.

 

My speckledy hybrid lays speckled eggs which are fab

Debs - am interested to know what your Wyandotte lays? I have one silver-pencilled Wyandotte with beautiful plumage but she lays tiny, disappointing eggs (infrequently) and goes broody often - is yours the same?

 

How do the Speckeldy's eggs compare size-wise to the Legbar's?
