bluekarin
Its going to be my mums 60th at the beginning of October and she'd like us (her kids) to cook her a Polish meal (she's Polish). I've had a quick browse on the tinterweb and there are so many ideas I'm not sure where to start. It could go two ways; either simple, rustic fodder or more upmarket dinner party stuff. Obviously there with be plenty of vodka of various flavours. So, I was wondering if anyone knew of any recipes to help me sort out the menu before letting my brother and two sisters know what we'll be doing. Thanks

Lesley
I'd probably go for rustic as well. I don't know what the food would be either - except that carp seems to feature on High Days and Holidays. There are always reports in the local paper of carp being taken from the rivers at Christmas time. Do you know what your mother's favourite dishes are? Old Speckled Hen
OMG whatever you cook you have to include Borscht and pierogi. It's as much a Polish dish as a Russian Wonderful! Edited for typo Oh and Pan fried grated potato pancakes. Fit those in somewhere

Fit those in somewhere Those two are on our list (I was thinking of doing the borscht as shots), as are platskis (the fried grated potato and onion cakes). A few people my brother works with have been to a some Polish weddings where there have lots of little dishes of food instead of a main starter, main and pud, so we are going to do it that way. I shall see if mum has some favourites, otherwise she may be cross.
