sgregson
Hi The only horse bedding our local pet supplier sells is Medi-Bed which is basically chopped up straw... does anyone use this and is it ok? Or do I need to look further afield for alternatives? Thanks, Sal
stoice
I've used it, although I use easi-bed or hemcore/Aubiose now, my mum still uses it for her girls. It's medicated to make it taste bitter to deter animals eating it and it composts really well. I just found it got a little slippery where my girls had made a deposit on it, which is why i switched to hemcore (Which soaks it all up lovely - i also have a covered run for this reason). I was also paranoid about the potential for red mite to hide in the 'tubes' of every blade of straw but I librally dust with DE anyway and my mum has never encountered any problems either. It depends what 'works' for you. Give it a go and if you don't like it, get something different next time maybe?
sgregson
Thanks... After some searching I've found a supplier of Hemcore that's not too far away so am going to pop across and get some this afternoon and see how we get on with that. How often to do change the floor of the run (mine too is covered)?
stoice
When things get a little icky, usually every 4-6 weeks depending on it's condition really. The poop usually disapears to nothing though, and I usually put down stalosan F before a new covering of hemcore. (And garden lime when my girls were on soil, but they are on slabs now)
