walk in run or cube plus omlet fencing!

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

not sure what to do!!! do i have a walk in run with my eglu or buy a cube with the standard run and fencing? the area i have is 9.5ft by 16ft.

i'm at home most of the time and at present the girls free range 6-7 hours a day, we have a fence around our garden which is 6ft high!

any help appreciated!!!

Charlotte (pink eglu)

Depends if you can see yourself having more chickens in the future or if you know for sure you'll stick at 4 or 5  . (I know I can't have more than 5 so have stuck with an eglu!)

Why don't you build the WIR first, see how it goes and then upgrade to a cube in the future? If you bear that in mind when building your WIR you could adapt it to eglu or cube.

Depends how much room you have in your garden. I think electric fencing needs a good gap between it and the walls/fences so that foxy doesn't jump from the wall over the electric fence (at which point he will be trapped IN your chook enclosure, which is definitely not what you want!). I usually allow at least 3 feet between the fence and the electric fence, probably better if it is more than this though. The electric fence is great for moving your chooks to different places in the garden, so if you have a large garden and you want to restrict them to one area which will be fox-proof, it is great. If they are always going to be in one spot, a WIR may be a better option.

I was hoping u would come along with some advice! well i may want a few more(checks to see if husband is looking)

I have been thinking about this for awhile and i thought if we were to move, then the cube and wire would be better! plus husband is not good at diy! so getting the floor levelled and having run built would have to be done by someone else. So would it be cheaper to get cube and wire then sell eglu (once i have got new chickens established)

i see what you mean about the fencing! well i cant make it electric because i dont want to electricute my 2 daughters! lol. i was planning on having one solid area, but also letting them have the run of my flower beds for a change of scenery sometimes!!! so thats why i like the fencing!

i think i maybe swaying to the cube and fence but want to hear others views.

I would eventually like to move somewhere with a bigger garden, thats why im worried about spending all that money on a wir!
