Introducing GSD to chickens

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

We have had our Eglu and 2 chickens for about 2 months and there've been great, they both lay everyday and seem happy. When were at home we let them free range and they seem to love scrathing about eating worms, flying ants and my lettuces and mange tout!

We are planning on moving to a nice house in a semi rural location with 3/4 of an Acre and I then plan to get to more and replace the Eglu with a cube. However we have just bought a female GSD and I was wondering if she could be trusted to be left alone with the chickens to free range. We are slowly introducing her by having her on a lead and the chickens in a run, does anybody know if one day I could let them out together and even have her "looking after" them by keeping the foxes away?

Any advice would be welcomed.

Thanks,

Dan

I never thought that I could trust my dog with our chickens as she had a couple of incidents with local chickens in the village (chased and pulled a few feathers out when they took her by suprise and ran off squawking and flapping). After a very short while though it become obvious that she considered they were part of her gang and is wonderful with them (she does have the odd moment if the children pick them up and they get flappy - I think that this is because she is worried for the childen). She can now be seen lying out in the garden with 'her girls'. Having had a GSD I have no doubt that once she gets used to them she will guard them as their guarding instinct is so strong that she wont be able to help herself :)
