cluckingmad Posted September 15, 2009 Share Posted September 15, 2009 Hi all, as many of you know, we lost our Millie this week and as a result all 6 remaining ladies have been closely inspected for mites and lice.... seen a few on each girl so tonight we dusted them as best we could with red mite powder. As this was almost as traumatic for us as for them (!), are there any products out there that you can use as a spot-on treatment, like in cats and dogs? Just thinking that the product would spread over the skin like in the moggies and doggies, so would be more effective than me attempting to rub powder onto the skin of some fairly displeased ladies (visions of my and t'other half sneaking intop the run under cover of dark, armed with pipette and torch!!) I also noticed that Jemima and Martha had quite hard skin on their rump, by their tails. not scabby but felt thicker and rougher than the others. Both have really rubbish feathers on their rump and tail so am wondering if there's anything I can get to help the skin recover from rubbing/pecking and what if anything I can give all the girls to help get their feathers back in good condition? xScrunchee Posted September 16, 2009 Share Posted September 16, 2009 I use Ivermectin* which I get from Ebay. Around £25 I think but you simply put drops on the skin at the back of the neck. It kills lice and mites. Red mite powder is more of a preventative than a cure so I wouldn't rely on it working to be honest. Or you could get some Johnsons anti mite spray* again-I got mine from Ebay for less than £5.00. A few squirts around the vent and neck should do the trick Both products require an egg withdrawal period of around 7 days I think.
