Google Images for you photos and just plain old Google for your info.

Wikipedia Commons is full of free photos.

if you use the bbc website, you can actually use all of their information as long as you dont plan on making money from it , its in the Interlectual property section ***here***

 

or you can look at freefoto.com (think thats what its called)

Another good place for images is http://www.gettyimages.com/CreativeImages/RoyaltyFree.

 

As for finding information, I agree that the combination of Wikipedia and Google is hard to beat, although you still have to be careful not to assume that what you find is correct just because it's there in type on t'interweb; there are plenty of very professional looking web sites and blogs talking absolute dangly bits.
