composting chicken poo - diatom powder /ant powder

Recommended Posts

Hi

I am now regularly putting diatom powder in poo tray plus a sprinkling of ant powder. Can I still compost the poo which I am hoping to put into my borders and veg beds?

If not which powder should I stop using? The ant powder as it contains Permithrin (sp)?

thanks

Kit.

whatever you do, don't wash out anything that has had permethrin in into your drains. Sometimes drains are wrongly connected and it could end up into ditches rivers or other watercourses. It is incredibly toxic to river life - I work for th Environment Agency and used to monitor streams and watercourses. sometimes if sheep that have been dipped in permethrin and kept in a yard to dry are then let out in a field and cross a stream, it can knock out all the natural insect life (and thus fish food, and thus kingfisher/otter food) in a river for several miles. Put any residue from cleaning out into a container (like an old ice cream tub or past sauce tub) and put it into your regular rubbish bin.

I wouldn't put it on the garden either - it could knock out good insects in your garden. :shameonu:

Hi Chicken Nutter

Yes I've have been so far beenn disposing into the council bin wrapped in several layers of bin liners. (I have a septic tank and did not want to risk destroying any good bacteria that is in the tank)

Think I will stop using the ant powder now that red mites are dealt with.
