Corn Fed chickens?

Recommended Posts

Hi

I want to get some corn as a supplement to the layers pellets for my chickens but am confused as to the meaning of corn fed chickens. The mixed corn at the pet shop is mainly wheat (I think) but the chickens love sweetcorn (or maize). I had some homegrown that they loved, but now it's all gone and I was wondering whether to buy them some whole maize which I saw on ebay - £22 inc p & p for 25kg (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Whole-Maize-25Kg-more-in-our-shop_W0QQitemZ160287402204QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_SportingGoods_FishingAcces_RL?hash=item2551dfa8dc&_trksid=p4634.c0.m14.l1262) ....or should I buy the mixed corn?

Thanks

I'd get the mixed corn, too much maize will just put fat on your chickens, ok if you want to roast them, not ok if you dont!

Corn is a treat food and should be fed sparingly

The pellets dont have to be supplemented but if you want to add anything for daily feeding then make it plaiin wheat and/or rolled barley

Thank you for the advice - I won't get the maize corn then! SJP, where did you get the wheat at that price?

Mind you, yesterday they had quite a feast of garden worms while I was digging over a veg patch. Betty swallowed one particularly huge juicy long fat worm so fast, I didn't even see it go

Then this lunch-time there were 3 eggs in the nesting box! First time we have had 3 at once from our 3 chooks :D
