Help Please - Wits end!

Recommended Posts

Think you are doing ok Steve. But still reckon the feather loss is from the original pecking and that you have to wait until they moult normally to regrow. You seem to have covered everything else.

Glad to hear you have porcupines. I have one of those, sorry sight to me but must be a joyful sight to you. :D

A couple of the chickens actually look normal now! Their combs have almost gone white though.

A few of them are looking sorry for themselves though.

Eggs are few and infrequent - we've had to buy shop eggs.

And shop eggs are horrid things. RSPC Freedom Food Medium Eggs. They seem small. They are tasteless abominations. With thin shells. Ugh.

Great news that you have some feathery chickens again. If their combs are pale it could be anaemia so I would just check the cube for mites. They do go paler when moulting though not white, but I think it could be the effort put in to feathering.

Guess a lot of us aren't getting many eggs at the moment.

I have 2 hens who both moulted twice over the summer and autumn and are now only just looking 'normal'! Betty - the youngest at 1 yr - went really off colour after the second moult and the lady at our local animal feed supplier suggested giving her cheap cat food (not chicken flavour!) a couple of times a week, as it is high in protein. After three weeks, her feathers are all back through and she has started laying again  Mavis (4 yr old) has got all her feathers back through but there's no sign of any eggs - none since April from her. Do you think she'll come back into lay?
