OllieNLucys Mum
Our little chick Lucy who was hatched at the end of April is now all grown up and has been laying now for 3 weeks one egg every day. I couldn't be more proud of her We are unsure of her breed but think she may be a maran. In July we bought 2 Welsummer girls who were also hatched In April. The welsummers have not shown any signs of laying yet. They obviously have the same food/environment as Lucy. I am worrying now that as the days are shortening they may not bother until next year. Are Welsummers slow to mature? I think they are 28 weeks+ now. Their combs are reddening up as are their wattles but they are a lot smaller than Lucy's. Is thre anything i should/shouldn't be doing? Jools
It really does vary chicken to chicken. I hatched two RIRs last year and one started laying a whole month before the other one. Contrary things chickens!
Redwing
Welsummers are not a very heavy bird so dont take ages to mature like some other pure breeds, their combs and wattles are fairly small and neat so if they are reddening up I would take this as more of a sign than size Fingers crossed you will get some eggs this year, of the pure breeds they are pretty good layers so may lay in the next few weeks but are likely to stop over the winter anyway
