Regrowth of feathers after attack?

Recommended Posts

One of our birds had a narrow escape from a fox several weeks ago - a lot of feather loss in terms of what was on the ground, but she looked OK. She had recovered from being broody and moulting and had begun laying again before the attack and continued laying for a couple of weeks afterwards.

She has since stopped laying for the last 2 weeks and when I checked her tonight, she had a lot of short, broken feathers underneath (ie she looks fine from a distance and you're only aware of the broken stuff when you hold her and check her over). Will these feathers grow back normally and in time? Should I be upping the protein in her diet?

I do feel sorry for her because it has begun to get very cold now!

Poor girl :( Are they definately broken feathers, or just new ones alread ycoming through? Nutmeg of buff sussex is currently bald in the rear department after a nasty run in with our hybrid girls so is now sporting a very snazzy little saddle I bought on ebay (did a search for poultry saddles, loads pop up :D)... she loves it and its keeping her nice a warm as the cold nights draw in..
