Lucky escape

Recommended Posts

Hi

As you know my girls freerange all day and are locked just before it gets dark. Well today as we were going to a 5th birthday party followed by dinner for the adults I asked our gardener to lock when he was leaving (approx 5pm) which he has done on numerous Saturdays for us.

Well I have just got home to find my girls wet and huddled together by the gate and their run door shut, I don't know what happened other than we are very lucky nothing untowards has happened.

My girls are now in bed and their feathers are wet...will they be ok or will they catch a cold? I have ran some towels over them to dry them off do I need to do more? I am worried that they will catch a cold during the night!

I am sure they will be fine we have had rain here most of the day and mine have been out in it most of the day.

They often sit on a table in the pouring rain huddled together when they could sit in the shelter part!

hope they are ok , they will dry off inside

I can't see why they shouldn't be fine, their feathers protect them, like most birds.

Poach was DRENCHED last week, absolutely sopping, and because we had Scramble in the warm due to being so ill, so Poach didn't feel left out we thought we'd give her a treat, and she absolutely LOVED the hair-dryer on a cool setting, I don't think I've seen Poachy sit so still for so long, she loved it, we then put her outside again (under cover) and she came straight out and scratched around the garden for over an hour getting sopping wet again.

From everything I've read and been told, chickens are very hardy birds and can survive in some quite extraordinary temperatures.
