MargotT
Hi All, I came home tonight to discover my 5 month old, Jerry, had laid an egg that was covered with a flesh- coloured membrane. When I pealed this back there was a layer of jelly between the membrane and a perfectly formed egg - here's a couple of pics of before and after Has anyone experienced this before and is it something i should be concerned about (or am i just being an ill-informed panicked newbie)? Jerry looks healthy enough and is behaving perfectly normally. Thanks, Lisa
Egluntyne
Not uncommon. Generally just a blip. So long as the hen is otherwise well, probably no need to worry.
MargotT
Thanks Egluntyne, that’s put my mind at rest. I’ll keep an eye on her over the next few days.
Forge Cottage
We have had a handful of eggs like this over time, literally... I even had one laid directly into my hand when I was helping an egg-bound hen to lay with the aid of a hairdryer! Yes, a softee bag, about a tablespoonful of clear gelatinous fluid and a perfect normal egg, often slightly darker than normal. The last one we had, the outer would have been the size of a cricket ball, so just as well it didn't get shell coated as it would have made her eyes water . They normally burst on the way out and the sac dries up very quickly. As long as the bag gets out complete, which it should, there is no problem. MargotT
Thanks for the advice; I’m certain the bag was all out so she should be OK. Since the strange egg incident Jerry’s gone on to lay a softie on the roosting bars on Thursday and a perfectly good egg in the nesting box today - I guess she must still be getting into her stride. As a precaution I’ve upped the oyster shell available to her to see if that helps.

MargotT
Yuk indeed! It was dark when i picked it up, a sensation I won’t forget in a hurry.... Good news is today we got another A-grade egg from Jerry so it would appear its full steam ahead for her.
