Buying e-books - advice needed!

Recommended Posts

Am considering getting an e-reader of some kind this Christmas, so have been following threads on this subject with interest.

Finding it hard to unravel buying the books themselves though! I can see that there are a lot of free books (great!) mostly those published some time ago, but newer books seem quite expensive. There are also a lot of very cheap ones for sale on e-bay, but some of my searches suggest that these are sold cheap to get you on mailing lists. I'm also not sure if they are even legal - surely you can't copy and sell books on?

Thanks for any advice!

Thanks for the link Aunty e; another friend has recommended this site too http://www.mobileread.com/.

I think Chucky Mama that I would be the same with the classics - pretty sure I've still got some unread Penguin ones from when they first brought out the 99p books  Nice to be able to have them - you never know!

My main areas of confusion now really are how do you own your copy and how do you know you are buying a legal copy, eg a disc off ebay.

A lot of sites seem to have you open an account and you download your books from them, like i-tunes type, but seem to remember a problem with a similar tune based site that was closed and a lot of people lost the tunes they'd downloaded, even though they'd paid for them.

There are tons of cheap looking e-books on e-bay, but from what I've read they might not be legal copies and they are getting round rules banning downloads by selling you a disc.

Have now had a look at some e-book readers in stores and think I can happily read from them, so just need to decide which one to get - wondering about a bebook as that can store music too (one less device on holiday then!).

I am not sure about the legality of the whole thing. My understanding is that books can be released after a certain length of time and can be made available free. Some of the books that appear on ebay may be available free elsewhere so I would be tempted to have a look around before buying them. I did buy one and then found out it was available free somewhere else. You download them as a file onto your computer and them upload them onto your ebook. I found it a wee bit confusing to start with but that is probably because I don't 'do' instructions
