LottieR
Hi, I was just wondering what people use in their nesting boxes as something for the chickens to lay on? We have had shredded paper in there which has been ok, but since we have been getting eggs (we had our first one last Sunday), i'm wondering if there is something better as the paper sticks to the shell and doesn't come off very easily. Thanks
Christian
Many use Aubiose or hemcore - horse bedding. Very good stuff, absorbent in case they sleep in the nest box, so droppings can be scooped out in the morning. I use it in the droppings tray too. rufusrooster
We use Hemcore in the WIR, I didn't think to use it in the nesting box, I am so dim! Thankyou. i havent been able to get hold of any aubiose or hemcore, they do sell hemcore where i was getting my easibed from but non in stock, what they do have is hemp bales, he says its the same but not branded so ive tried that, a lot softer than easibed easibed £8.63 hemcore £10.42 hemp bale £8.50 how does this compare to what you pay for proper branded hemcore ? docsquid
how does this compare to what you pay for proper branded hemcore ? Our local place sells branded Hemcore for between £8.50 and £8.75. They also seem to be able to get stock of it at the moment. They also stock Aubiose and Easibed, but I like the smell of Hemcore! I put it on the floor of the run and in the poo trays and nest box and they love it. It really makes poo-picking easy as they all nest in the nest box overnight. Comes off the eggs really easily. LottieR
I think we pay £9.25 for Hemcore from a very odd garden centre, we haven't shopped around for it, but we probably should.
beulah59
I use shredded paper in the nest box but with a layer of chopped straw on top. Of course it gets mixed in, but I don't find it sticks the way it does with just paper.
dippy bird
I was using straw, but it was getting soooo soggy! So now I am using aubiose which is so much better,I have put it in the poo tray as well - loads better than saw dust!
