Internet/Telephone problems

Recommended Posts

Knowing that collectively, you should be known as the Omlet Oracle, I thought I would run my current problem past you.

Firstly, my PC died. It spluttered to life occasionally but not enough to make it worth while. That problem is now sorted as I have a lovely new machine and noone is allowed to eat in the study to get 'orrible crumbs down the keyboard :vom:

However, last week the internet started going a bit funny and stopping every now and again. About the same time, the phone line started crackling big time.

I tried a corded phone to see if it was my cordless causing all the problems. I have unplugged all the sky boxes etc and tried that. I phoned BT who said that there was not a problem with the line. Unfortunately, when they phoned back to see if everything was ok, it was. The crackling had stopped and the internet was working perfectly so I bid them a fond farewell thinking that it was all hunky dory.

Now the crackling is back and the internet keeps losing it again. I can't help thinking that the snow may have damaged a line somewhere around. Our only neighbours are ancient and don't have a computer so I can't ask if they have the same problem.

Has anyone else had anything similar ro have any thoughts.

Sorry for the long post. Fingers crossed now to make sure the connection stays long enough for me to submit it!

We had this problem a few years back & eventually succeed in getting BT to come & check the lines........they did stipulate that if the problem was outside our house it was their problem, if it was inside it was ours...it was outside thankfully as the call out fee seemed exorbitant  I think they ended up replacing some cables.......quite a long stretch too if memory serves correctly :anxious:

Yours could well be water/ice in the cables which is giving intermittent problems, I'd ring them when the phone was crackly & get them to run the fault check then not later.

The fact that you've gone "back to basics" in the house to no avail suggests it is an outside problem....in my humble opinion of course

I hope it's sorted soon, it's amazing how quickly we've become reliant on the internet etc isn't it

Thanks for the replies.

After a large proportion of my life spent waiting for someone to talk to, I eventually got an engineer's appointment. I had some discussion over what I may have to pay for.

Now they have phoned to say I don't need an appointment as it is external!

In the meantime I will keep coming and going offline and won't be able to watch iplayer or download anything as I have very very narrowband. Fingers crossed they can sort it!
