Poorly Chicken

Recommended Posts

Hi

One of my gorg girls, Princess Leia is poorly...she has not laid an egg in a very long time now...her eggs were very thin shelled before she stopped laying...haven't even seen a softie for ages...gave her all the calcium supplements poss but nothing helped. She has sterile peritonitis (spelling!).

She is what I would describe as hunched over...he neck is close into her body...she is standing around alot and has her eyes closed often..she is eating and drinking.

My first thoughts were worms so I started Flubenvet 5 days ago and have been giving her castor oil for 4 days too after reading lots of posts about poorly chickens...she doesn't appear to be getting either worse or better.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Lou

My Ella had sterile peritonitis and occasionally had days where she was less active. It's probably that which is causing her to be hunched rather than anything else.... possibly combined with the colder weather and the dull days.

Have you checked over for lice?

Just keep a close eye on her like you are doing, if it becomes really worrying then a trip to the vet may be in order - but if it is sterile peritonitis that is causing it then there isn't much that can be done anyway. And the egg laying will be very rare also - Ella laid once a year with it.

If she is eating and drinking that is a good sign.

Have a look round her vent. You will see lice eggs cemented to the base of the feathers in that area. You will also notice beige beasties scuttling around in the feathers.

I'm guessing her symptoms are related to the peritonitis.

I'd get a vet to have a look at her.
