I know mine hate it, ive recently lost 2 girls and i think the cold did not help, i also have 2 cream legbars who seem to hate it the most and look at the snow as if it is lava and it might swallow them up!

 

I just had to manually remove one of them and put its head by the food to get it to eat!

My original cream legbar Bluebelle barely came out of the coop at all during the last cold stretch.

I was hoping we had seen the last of the snow and here it is again.

How are the rest coping and is there any tips?

I am back to giving them hot mash with mealworms or corn late in the afternoon as it is back to frozen ground and the snow that have fallen is still hear as it is too cold to defrost. Must admit they love the warm mash and at least I know they are full going to bed. It is getting a bid annoying though as they loved the wee bit of sunshine we had earlier last week

i always feed them a cup of corn in the afternoon, but what is hot mash?

It is just their feed with boiling water poured over it to make it a porridge (mash), then I throw in some sweetcorn let it cool but still warm and even though it is their feed they think it is great and gulp it down.

I give mine this too and yes even though it is just their normal pellets they gobble it down like its a royal feast I throw in raisins or sweetcorn or any spare veg or a bit of tuna, anything really and i add a bit of poultry spice too

Sounds like a great recipe, my poultry spice tends to just sit in the bottom of the feeder!

Hahaa, there you go then, put it into some warm mash and it sticks to it, and my girlies love it

Yes, mine love warm mashed up ex-batt crumb (they're not ex batts but they like the crumb) with warm water, raisins, mealworms and poultry spice, plus a few grapes and other bits of treats thrown in.

 

It hasn't been that cold here - I have used the snugglesafe only on a few nights.

Mash is a great way of getting all sorts of goodies into them. Poultry spice as CW said, plus cod liver oil, garlic powder, you know, stuff that you don't want to have languishing at the bottom of the pellet feeder

I use layers mash for mash (if you see what I mean), rather than pellets, which they have the rest of the time. It's great for mixing cod liver oil into. You can just rub it into the dry mash (ie. before you add the water, like you do when you're making pastry, so it mixes evenly.

mine sat out in the rain all one day looked very small with soggy feathers. Lily had white feathers but now is a mud coloured. they were cautious at first of the snow but their stomach won them over they have had a scratch about when it's not to thick( the snow that is, not the chooks )
