Redwing
Judges will have been trained on the standard for each breed, the standard says what the breed and colour should look like so it will list what colour legs and eyes the bird should have and that if its buff there should be no white on the feathers at the base for example There are points awarded for certain things eg: 20 points for head 20 points for colour 10 points for condition etc.. they add up the points they have given your bird and compare it to the total points available and then award prizes based on that, they do this in their heads usually, you dont know where your bird failed without asking the judges afterwards The Poultry Standards book will have the standard for all breeds given, its expensive but you may be able to get it through your local library Two of my pekins below, the buff one has the tilt that I mentioned yesterday, see how low her front is, the lavender one doesnt have the tilt, see how you can see under her? thats not desirable for the show scene - luckily she is just a pet

Redwing
They should be different yes, a Frizzle will not have the tight feathering of a plain feathered chook
