Smiler33
One of my neighbours has offered me the stalk of vegetables/leaves etc that she doesn't use (she used to keep them back for her guinea pig but he died). Are the chickens OK to have this? I know they can't have raw potato peelings, but what can / can't they have? If you need to cook anything up for them, how long do you do it for? Sorry ! Oh, got another egg from Betsy Boo this morning - what a good girl
Slim
Should not be a problem I found with some greens it is better to chop it up or boil it for a few mins (can be done in microwave!) to make it soft my girls give up if things are to tough! Valkyrie
If I slice the calabrese I find they can eat the centre easily and just leave the outer skin. I'm forever picking up flat shells!
Space Chick
My girls love raw leaves, I often put a whole cabbage in for them (although red cabbage does turn their poos a bluey green colour ) With carrot and parsnip peelings, I whizz these up in t a food processor with some bokashi bran, and they love it
meezers
My chooks will eat most veges, they have their favourites- brussel sprout leaves get left 'til last, but everything is eaten eventually. Carrots they find a bit hard, so I pop the peelings ( which are getting thicker and thicker while our carrot servings are getting smaller )in with our potatoes and boil them for a few minutes, they LOVE boiled carrot . All leftover veges, apple cores, over ripe bananas, plums and grapes etc go into the chookie treats bowl on the worktop, and that gets given to them every afternoon. Smiler33
Many thanks everyone - looks like they're little walking waste disposal units! Off to chop up some pasta left over from last night which I think they will enjoy - little round worms for the girls
Smiler33
I'm really sorry to be such a numpty, but when doing the cooked potato peelings is it best to pop the peelings into a tub and put into the fridge and then cook up when needed (lunchtime tomorrow), or cook it this evening and then put into a tub and put into the fridge and then take out to warm up to room temperature before feeding tomorrow pm. Sorry for asking - guess who has got mash for tea tonight Honestly ... this is worse than looking after kids!
Space Chick
You'd be fine to do either I'd say
Smiler33
Thank you (runs away and hides in embarrassment)! Can't believe I asked that question I found the girls liked Zoë's pear core - Tikka grabbed it and was mobbed by the other 3 who pulled bits off. Think next time I'll chop it up ready. JS1
My girls love raw leaves, I often put a whole cabbage in for them (although red cabbage does turn their poos a bluey green colour ) Thanks so much for that - just googled 'omlet, chickens, red cabbage' because I gave my six a couple of chunks of it earlier and the poo is technicolor blue! I was panicking slightly lest I'd poisoned them. They're all running about and very perky but I don't think I'll give them any more just in case...
