Candled

Recommended Posts

 Well I got a high lume candler in the post today and I confirmed at least one of my three eggs in the rcom are duds - the dorking unfortunately. I cracked it and it hadn't done anything - the change I had seen was the breakdown of the yolk and bacterial ring. The next one I did was the Aracuna - the high lume couldn't get through it! But in the dark cupboard I could see the air sac which was a bit odd shaped (kind of went down one side a bit as well and the rest was dense black. So I am firmly crossing fingers although the odd shape was a worry? (as if I know what I am on about!). I then did the Maran which I had no hope for seeing through (and was the reason I bought that candler!) and it worked well. I couldn't see veins but something is happening, the air sac was clear and about a quarter of the egg and there was a dark blob at one side of the egg (although saying this I saw a website that showed something similar as a dud..). Hoping and praying I get two, or none. Anyway, I shoved a spare egg in there, a barnvelder that came with the batch. It has been in the utility room since they arrived and I know it is probably too old, but it just might not be (set them 7 days ago)..now I have the decent candler at least I will know soon enough. I have odered a really cheap manual inc from ebay so provided I can get it to work and the egg develops, the late egg will be transferred before lockdown. My husband is going to KILL me, we are meant to be budgeting

Maddie, at least yours is letting you hatch etc....my DH just mutters "don't you have enough" amongst other things  Good luck with your little ones

Amie I'd leave her to it & wait for the surprise at the end, taking the eggs out of the nest to candle them might unnerve the mum & cause her to leave the nest, just what you don't want at this stage :anxious:

I know what you mean by the odd shape air sack - mine have a few like that, but 2 weeks on something is still alive and developing - I tried taking a photo of the candled egg (on here in the 'what to get' thread).

Last time I hatched I had no candler, left them all in to the end and got 11 out of 12 hatch. This time the candling seemes to be addicitive and apart from clear eggs I am not 100% convinced on anythin, but at least I only have 5 days to wait now.
