Doesn't make much sence as a joke, I thought a coup de grace was when a power (like the army) overthrows the government of the same country.

That would be a Coup d'état. A Coup de grâce is the final blow to a fatally wounded enemy

I saw the story on the news and the owner of the chickens and the daughter.

 

They did say that it was hit by the table/stool and died then the chickens pecked at it and not that the chickens killed it.

 

Lets hope that no animal suffered and it was a quick death for the fox from the blow to the head.
