Chicken boarders

A friend sent me this article - it made me laugh. What, chickens poo? They eat your veg, and actually make a noise?

 

Apparently all this is news to the author, who presumably got his chickens thinking that they were the only animal on the planet that doesn't poo, or maybe thought they could be toilet-trained!

It's not a very positive article is it, you wonder why she persevered for a year if she feels like that about them.

 

It does sound as if she was after egg-production more than actually enjoying having hens though - artificial light to keep them laying.

And in the comments the old "don't you need a rooster for eggs" chestnut rears it's daft old head.......

 

Some people just aren't suited to chook keeping......perhaps if she moved the coop away from the house she'd have less noise to contend with...just a thought........

One of the comments also suggests you can feed chicken to your chickens - I'm sure they'd eat it but I can't imagine it's a good idea!

 

@Olly - yes, I think he's after eggs rather than the joy of having chickens.

Although some of the comments were a bit ignorant, I felt the article was generally positive.

It was an unusual article

 

I am amazed at the discussion on noise Yes they egg announce, yes they bok, but my 14 are fairly quiet, and I love nothing more than to wake up and hear their content sounds, also all my neighbours love hearing them aswell

I think it's good though to make sure people don't think keeping chickens is easy. I read lots that said how simple it was. I also read a lot of this forum before getting them to know to expect the unexpected. Keeping chickens is no easier than keeping any animal, and it's good for people to have a touch of the seconds before leaping blindly in. I love my chickens and I'm really glad I got them, but I do worry all the time that I'm looking after them properly. I think the article is a little bit of a reality check.

It is funny isn't, how we try and interpret a "tone" to these two or three line dittys

 

Funny as well because I took the other view that he probably thought they were more bother than they were worth. Though as someone else says in the thread pointing out that is not all double yolkers is probably a good thing.
