Poor old Speckled Rose (Speckled Sussex) has broken her toe. It has been in a splint for five days - had that redressed yesterday but its come off now and don't know whether to incur more expense at the vet or just splint it myself. Has anyone else had to deal with a broken toe?

No experience but I'd be inclined yo go back to the vet.

 

I take it was the vet's that redressed it? Could you not say "That redressing you did, did not last very long ..."

Can't say I have, but as medical person I would say that if it was a simple break and if you can re-create what the vet did, then that will probably be just as good.

I would take her back this time and ask them if they can show you how to dress it yourself saying 'it is really stressful for her coming into the surgery so I would like to be able to do it at home'. I am sure that they will be happy to show you.

Actually if anyone has had any experience of a chicken with a broken toe I would love to hear from you. Although the toe is well dressed and looks likely to heal , the whole experience might take its toll be too much. Could a bird die of a broken toe?

I don't have any experience of a broken bone, but our hen had ligament damage for several months and hobbled around quite happily with a splint on her leg that the vet put on and led a normal chicken life.

 

I would have thought your hen would be ok, just keep an eye on her as I am sure you will.

Thanks - she seems to be feeding but will probably lose weight over this.
