PeckyBeak
In October last, I bought 2 new chickens from a different dealer than normal, to add to my existing 9 girls. Neither had had any vaccinations. Within 4 weeks the Wellsummer had to be PTS with Marek's confirmed by autopsy. The other chicken presumably has some immunity as she is fine. All my other girls had been vaccinated before I bought them, so they were ok (thank goodness), however, I understand though, that they may now be carriers of the disease as they were in contact with the poorly chook. I have been offered some extra chooks from a friend who can no longer keep them but they have not been vaccinated against anything since they never go anywhere. If I take them on, how great is the risk that they may contract Marek's from my vaccinated girls, or the immune one? Also, should I consider taking on chickens that have not had any vaccinations against all the other chicken diseases. Sound advice needed please. Egluntyne
I would say that the risk is pretty low to be honest, if they are in good general health. Many hobby breeders never vaccinate their hens. It is generally done when the hens are being bred /sold on a commercial scale.
