Guest
having marfan syndrome, I don't tend to like planning too far ahead so while paying off some of the mortgage might be sensible, i'd rather keep the money to hand. I don't want to tie it up in something where i can't get access to it quite quickly. It's in an on -ine savings account at the moment until we've decided what to do with it, thanks for all the advice
badgerbluebadger
I work in Life and Pensions and have taken my financial exams - there is some really good advise on here!!But I would also look into National Savings and Investments! http://www.nsandi.com/products Depending on what you wish to do with your money, how long you wish to invest and how likely you are to want access to it I would go for the Direct Isa or the Saving cerfitcates as they are free from tax. Guest
just in case anyone is thinking along the same lines, just letting you know what we ended up doing. Our bank does a current account that pays 4% aer on balances btwn £4000 and £7000 as long as you pay in £1000 a month so we've put £7000 (we, erm, spent some of the £9000 on a tent, an armchair from ikea, my upcoming (40th) birthday present and a few bits and bobs ) in there and will have DH's wages paid into it then just set up a standing order for his wages to transfer across to our main account. I've also filled in a form to claim any tax back in my name on the interest. The interest (about £22 a month) goes in monthly so i might transfer the interest across into another savings account and let that acrue for special treats etc. I don't get the 4% on anything over £7000, so it's not worth leaving it in the current account. anyway, that's what we've done for now, thanks for all the advice. Guest
no worries, I'm not sure you can do much better than 4% for that amount in the current climate
