Tandem

Recommended Posts

We were camping that night, and there was nowhere to lean it (the little fence you can see in the picture was just wire and not very strong - since this wasn't a proper campsite, we'd just asked the landowner if he'd mind us pitching up there, we didn't want to risk wrecking the place!) Didn't want to lie it down on the grass, cos of our lovely Brooks saddles which don't like getting wet, so we just tied it where it was!

We are back safely after 3 hours on a tandem - no stress or cross words and a few laughs - we even did a few hills AND he even listened when I requested we slow down and actually used the break downhill!

... Huh??? No cross words?? Really? None???? How does that work then? We found that whoever was on the front was happy and cheery, but whoever was at the back was v grumpy (and yes, we did swap - it wasn't just becuase I was on the back!)

How is it possible to be grumpy on the back of a tandem, when there is so much opportunity to goose the captain and do jazz hands??

To answer some of your questions:

- There were no arguments as the wife (stoker on the back) is always correct. When the pilot knows he takes instructions from his back seat driver all is fine :lol: he simply knows I have to enjoy it for us to get a tandem - however I am not convinced after a pub stop it would be quite the same! Having heard a story today of a friend not noticing his wife had got off until she failed to reply to his conversation 2 miles on I am sure it will not always be harmony on a tandem!

- E-bay is a not an option - I am short and only the Dawes Duet (lowest in their range) is small enough for me - this bike only came in in 2009 and none have come up on E-Bay - the other tandems come in 2 sizes and the only ones on ebay are about 4" too big framesize for me

- I have spoken to JDs (Ilkely) - they will do the build & pre-delivery check for the warranty and then re-pack into a larger box for delivery (£525 for a 2009 model, but no different spec to 2010 model)

- One local supplier will do pre-check & free 6 week check for £649.

- The main dealer, 2 miles from us, who had quoted £699 (rrp) has said he will do it for £510 as is (it is already made up and in the shop), or £550 including servicing before delivery.

- I can also get an ex-hire 2009 one from Rutland cycles - this would have been ridden for last summer for £449, but would have no warranty.

Decisions, decisions! It is our 22nd wedding anniversary tomorrow so I think this would make a great joint present to each other.

Great story Tracy :o

With regard to your buying dilemma - you've done a great job with the main dealer 8) If a warranty is important to you then I think I'd go with the main dealer who is close because you should be able to get the bike to him in the future more easily - eg the point that was made about potentially needing to have the gears adjusted in say 6 weeks is valid so I'd check out the costings there. I don't know what a service entails (is it really necessary?) so I'm not sure which option I'd go for.

Happy Wedding Anniversary, I think this is a lovely present to each other.

Many Congratulations

I'd go for the one from the Main dealer if I were you, especially as they have it ready and waiting!

I rang the local dealer this morning, it is being serviced this morning and we can collect it this afternoon :clap:

I think OH can ride it back a couple of miles on his own and I can take the car back!
