limping chicken

Recommended Posts

Hi ,

thanks for your reply. No there is nothing there, as far as I can see, but it was bruised couple of days ago and now it is swollen ( a joint at the middle of big toe) , if that means anything.

By the way I have Metacam 1.5mg left over from my dog , would that be any good?

As this is a prescription medication intended for dogs whilst it is given to chickens on occasion it is only legal for a vet to advise you on whether it should be used and a what dose even then legally they have to see your chicken first.

The best treatment for any potential lameness is rest. I would enforce rest by keeping her confined in a smaller space. Is there any chance that she has bumblefoot?

Morning,

Well the toe seemed a bit blue before, but it doesn't look broken. it is not even that swollen but she doesn't like to put her weight on it.

she runs for food but when standing definitely stands on one leg.

Hi, I would get her to the vet asap. :anxious: My Matilda had a broken leg a year or so back and it sounds very much like this. The vet was quickly able to ascertain that her leg was broken - I couldn't tell - and managed to put a cast on it! She had to have 3 changes of cast (very colourful they were too), and was left with a lump on her leg where the bones knit but was absolutely fine 6 weeks later :roll: . Although she had a broken leg rather than toe, she would hop but could put it down briefly if she had too. She showed no other signs of distress, ate and drank normally. I would really advise getting it checked out.

Thanks eggy-bread ,

Took her to the vet , it is not broken, ( thank god). Gave her some anti inflammatory. She seems a bit better today. I have separated her from others too, and in a box.

Onwards and upwards, hopefully.

Hi Vida, I'm so glad her leg isn't broken :D . It just brought back memories of when Matilda broke hers (I'd not had her very long) and I didn't realise then felt awful cos I didn't get her to the vet earlier. I feel it's always best to know for sure as you just can't tell how off colour the girls are sometimes. Onwards and upwards as you say :pray::clap:
