annettec Posted April 6, 2010 Share Posted April 6, 2010 We have been looking for a Legbar for my son who is keen on a blue layer ! We had planned to also get a couple of Pekins from the breeder too. They are now 6 weeks old and we are going to have a sneaky preview this week but unfortunately the Legbar we were hoping for has for has dodgy feet ! She is walking around ok although on her heels apparentley, the breeder has said she will keep her if we would rather not have her for the eggs but don't know what to do If she is walking around ok now at 6weeks will this continue as she gets bigger or heavier am happy to go with a "non perfect chicken" always up for giving an animal a happy life for as long as possible but would we really be mad taking her on ? especially as it is so upsetting for the children when we lose one although am a believer in them understanding the rules of life both sad or happy ! Snowy Posted April 6, 2010 Share Posted April 6, 2010 If she is only wanted for eggs, then deformities of the legs are not really a problem. As long as it is a deformity, rather than an infection - bumble foot or scaley leg, which would need treating. The other thing to ask is if she will be able to access the roosting bars and nest box and is she still quick enough to avoid bullies. If you can be reassured on these points, I would go for it Many people have 'disabled' chooks who are still able to lay and get about, just not as 'prettily' as their sisters. She was lovely and is coming home to us in two weeks, her name is Fleur we thought she should have a pretty name as her feet really are very ugly and very dodgy She is getting around perfectly roosting on a piece of cane and carrying a little Pekin Bantam around on her back who is her friend ! Eating well and seemed very sociable so couldn't resist. She just has three of her toes going off at funny angles! We may regret it but the breeder has said any problems she will take her back and really did not pressure us to have her but my Son aged 8 fell in love with her and his choice of name too.
