annettec
Sorry to be a pain but found something crawling around the neck of one of my chickens I have throughly cleaned out the Eglu and sprayed with Poultry shield and left to dry in the lovely sun ! I have dusted the poo tray shavings, nest and bars with Louse powder (smells lovely) and then plan to dust the girls tonight too. Is this enough to kill whatever it is on them? looked smaller than a sesame seed and goldish in colour only found one and now the chicken won't sit still enough so am just going to treat ! Alot of people mention the Johnsons spray but is the louse powder ok too or do i need both Thanks AGAIN
Egluntyne
Definitely sounds like a louse. Have a furtle in the the feathers around her vent. If there are rows of tiny eggs concreted to the bases, that clinches it. Louse powder (it does smell lovely) is more of a preventative than a cure. I would use Johnsons' Anti Mite spray (works for lice, despite its name) *Not licensed for use on poultry in UK, so an egg withdrawal period applies. 48 hours according to the manufacturer. Repeat dose in about 5 days to catch any hatchers.
