Fencing ideas and theft

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Ive recently been given permission by the owner of the field behind my house that I can keep my chickens in there. I'm planning to make a big pen for my chickens with enough room so that I can get more. But Im not too confident about chicken wire fencing, no matter how high. So I was wondering what you guys use to contain your flocks. I know you're all going to advise me to get electric fencing, but im on a bit of a budget and I wondered if there was some other fencing technique which worked?

And what about theft? Have any of you had problems with theft and should it be something I should be concerned about, moving my chickens into a big field and expanding my flock?

Thanks :)

Weldmesh fencing to about 6ft is needed plus either a weldmesh roof or some netting tightly attached over the top

Heras/Harras panels that builder use are excellent if you can get hold of them, they make for a good budget run

And sadly yes, do be worried about theft, I rent a field right behind my house but I keep all valuable/precious chooks and equipment close to the house and not in the field

Painting your name/postcode in white gloss paint on equipment helps reduce the chances of them being stolen

There is not a great deal security-wise you can do with chickens, leg rings can be removed, a blob of purple spray would devalue them though they wouldnt look very pretty!
