What makes a chicken coop easy to live with?

I last posted to say we were off on holiday and I was going to miss my chooks. Well we got home a week late last Thursday after spending 6 nights in a Newark airport hotel due to the Volcanic ash. My neighbour looked after my chooks beautifully - I knew she would, they were clean and well fed and watered, but Hattie, my Blackrock, decided to pass away the day we were supposed to return home.

She was one of my original 6 and hadn't laid in a while, so I wasn't surprised, but my poor neighbour felt terrible. I'm so pleased to be home and as a bonus, with the chooks being shut in for 3 weeks instead of 2, I actually have green things growing in my garden ( think they are called plants - it's hard to remember ) but it's making me think long and hard about letting the chooks out to free range again.Now I'm down to 8 there is plenty of room for them in their WIR.

Anyone else had an extended holiday ? or is anyone still stuck abroad ?

Glad you finally made it home eventually, what a horrible time stuck in the airport for you!

So sorry to hear about Hattie too , your neighbour must have felt awful, but how wonderful of her to have looked after your girls so well for you! Tell her from us we think she did a great job from what you say

My girl friend from Manchester couldn't get over to see us because of the "Ash Thing" but all is now back to normal here in Tenerife. Although there were 6,000 people stranded here for over a week, many with no money left for hotels, lots of residents were providing meals and beds for them. Brought out the best in everyone.
