Would it be safe to have a compost bin in a WIR? The space I have for the WIR is down the side of the house, 2 walls for sheltering and a big solid door to the front. I intend to roof this area and fence it off to make the run. Luckily it gets plenty of light and that is why the compost bin is there. I don't have any other space for the bin. So would it be safe for the chickens to leave the bin there inside he WIR or not? Its a tall green plastic one.

Thanks :)

I don't see why not - I'm assuming the hens won'tbe able to get into the bin itself? You just need to consider how convenient it will be for both putting waste into the bin, and digging out compost when you want it.

Will your WIR be on slabs or concrete? If not, then I'd say maybe not as it will be another incentive for rats to move in (they seem to love the combination of a warm home and nicely rotting material).

There's usually a bit of seepage from compost bins too as the contents break down, which might not be best for your chickens.

And finally, speaking as someone who has yet to find the ideal place for her compost bins, they really do need to be located where they're easy to empty. Convenience for shoving stuff in is one thing, but doing battle with those green darleks at turning or emptying time is no fun at all. It's also pretty messy, so more opportunity for contamination.

All in all, I wouldn't, but if it's your only option ......
