chuckmum6
Do you think two broodies could share a coop? I have 3 broodies, 1 has been sitting on 6 eggs, it looks like only 1 is fertile , she is in my spare ark. The other two are in the cube, and sitting on nothing other than the other girls egg, which I collect daily (much to their disgust). I would like to hatch out more than 1 chick and wondered if I could move another hen into the broody ark with her? I might be able to get some fertile eggs this weekend so....what do you think, the new lot would be a week behind the fertile egg?
Redwing
Generally the answer is no, only one broody should be in a coop Some people however have had two broodies together with no problems, I guess it all depends on how close the two hens are Personally though I wouldnt risk it A rabbit hutch would do as a broody coop until the chicks are up to a week old then the'll need a run too
Griffin
I have to admit I do have two broodies sharing a coop at the moment but these two are the only two out of all of mine I would ever consider having together. Bridget & Francesca are gold Brahma sisters, have never been apart, are utterly devoted to each other and until Francesca went broody were stuck together like glue. Francesca didn't seem overly happy to be sat on eggs initially and within days of their enforced separation Bridget went broody too. Francesca looked over the moon to see her sister again and both have sat side by side for about ten days now. Between them they have seven FW Marans eggs that are due at the end of this week. It's been interesting to see how the pair of them have behaved, they've played pass the parcel with the eggs, sometimes they're equally shared, sometimes one has all of them. Both have created a nest around themselves. The only problem has been that sometimes Bridget wouldn't let Francesca back in after a comfort break! Each has enjoyed a leisurely few hours away from the nest sunning themselves and dustbathing. I'll be monitoring them closely as the chicks hopefully hatch and will step in if I have to. If anyone is going to cause problems it'll be Bridget and she'll be removed. It's tricky with these eggs as they're so dark and I haven't a clue if any are fertile, but hopefully each hen will hatch at least one chick I wouldn't try it with my other hens as none have the very close relationship that these two have.
