Going away for a night & leaving chickens?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

This is my first post after a couple of weeks of reading & absorbing- we've decided we'd like to keep two or three chickens, & most of my initial concerns about keeping them in a city environment have been answered, but one thing I'm still unsure about is whether we'd be able go away for a night occasionally & they'd be alright?

I've read about auto feeders, etc- is that what these are for?

We've recently moved house & don't know anyone well enough yet to trust with our keys & ask a favour, so that's not really an option at the moment.

Any advice will be gratefully received!

Graeme

If your run is a sturdy fox resistant one then I'd simply leave them with plenty of food and water and the coop door open

Auto drinkers are available but need a header tank or hose pipe rig up and to be honest as long as you have a big drinker (or a few smaller ones) you could leave them for a couple of days no problems

Auto pop hole openers are available for coops with a slide up and down pop hole if your run is not too sturdy this will give added seurity

Hi and welcome!

AS long as they are in a secure run they will be fine. Just put extra food and water out for them and leave the coop door open. We have done this for a couple of nights a few times without any problems.

Any longer than that and you will need a willing helper to collect the eggs and feed and water the hens.

We never have a shortage of volunteers on that front! :D

Hello, and welcome to the forum. :D Redwing got there before me. Another option is to see if any Omleteers live in your area. I believe that quite a lot of chicken sitting goes on between people on the forum.

Let us know when you get your chooks + we would love to see their photos. We are photo mad on here.
