Toots
So Jo Jo the daft chicken needs an op! She has spent the last 4 days looking sorry for herself, not eating much and not really drinking. A trip to the vets and a quick course of antibiotics didn’t really help. She would only eat the occasional grape and we had to syringe water into her! We were referred to an avian vet in Wokingham who this morning said she is in good health apart from the lump in her crop, we pointed out to the other vets. He thinks she has eaten a stone about 3cm in length and 1.5 in diameter. It’s stuck in her crop, so he is going to operate to remove it today! Whe would she eat something that big that she cant shift! I have seen her swollow a whole grape about that size so i know she can do it but what attracted her to a stone! she gets grit and free ranges! Will let you know more when we pick her up at 5:10 today!

Toots
see that you've some ex-batts about to be rehomed - WELL DONE YOU!!! You won't regret it, we haven't. well i was told mid may but i still haven't had any news about a date! Don't want to call and chase up as i am sure they will get here when they can but i am pasing the floor!
staceychristie
Trouble is that you're reliant on the farmers dates, and rescue volunteers availability. As you can see from my signiture, ours have been here nearly a year. They look so sorry for themselves when they arrive, but ours now look so fluffy, we've thought about going into shows with them. It's like the story of the ugly duckling........................ Stacey
Toots
not a clump of grass, not a stone, it was a grape! yes a grape she swallowed hole! went hard, started fermenting and generally made her uncomfortable! close escape and no more grapes. incidentally the avian vet advised us that grapes can be toxic to some birds including chickens! I know there are people who let chickens eat as many grapes as they can find but i am not going to take the chance anymore.

staceychristie
Oh thank heavens . Grapes eh? I used to give them cut in half as they had pips in them - but found that they prefer sultanas anyway. They are bloomin' fab at making us worry. SOOOO Glad that she's ok. Did she need an op then? Stacey
