egg shells

Recommended Posts

Can anybody tell me if its ok to give my hens their old egg shells back? I noticed that if they happen to crack an egg whilst laying they all make a mad dash for it, and seem to gobble up the egg shell. I wondered if I gave them the old egg shells back if this would be good for their grit?

Yes you can! best to wash them first and then bake them in a low oven for 10 mins or so. It makes them more crumbly and takes the taste of egg away. You don't want to encourage egg eating. It won't be a supplement for grit, as that is much harder, but will give them additional calcium.

yes it should do - i have been doing this for a few weeks now and it does seem to have made a difference. i just wash them and put them in the microwave for a minute on high, instead of the oven, then i crush them up and feed it to them - its weird 'cause they see it as a treat and go mad for it!
