Burtie14
Hello everyone. Things are really hotting up in the henhouse (metaphorically). After weeks of digging, chopping, grinding and mixing, I now have a beautiful flat concrete base in my garden. Tony is going to deliver my WIR tomorrow morning, my Cube should arrive on Monday, we're off to pick up bedding and stuff at the weekend, so all that's left is to acquire some feathered friends. Has anyone used a good breeder in Surrey/south east? I was planning to visit Southmead Poultry - are there any others that come highly recommended? Or can I put all my eggs in Southmead's basket? We're not looking for anything too specialist - probably a couple of Rhode Islanders and/or Warrens, and maybe a cheeky Sussex thrown in. What we really want though is peace of mind that we'll go somewhere that we feel we can trust. Thanks, Burtie (pending)
MummyHen
Can't help specifically with breeders in Surrey, but here's the link to the breeders list on this site viewtopic.php?f=42&t=4658. I got my hybrids from Hen House Poultry in Maidstone - who are very good. How did your visit from Tony go? Any photos - we do like a photo or three
scarlettohara
I've had 5 lovely chooks from Golden Valley Poultry and would recommend them - they have a website with a list of hybrids for sale
squidsin
I got two of my pekins from Surrey Poultry - she also had some lovely birds including very cute looking emu chicks...
Laura & CTB
I got my last four hybrids from Southmead, Tracey there is very nice and extremely helpful. Wherever you go have fun, choosing chickens is great
lheurebleue
Burtie, I too was looking at Southmead Poultry as they seem very reasonable in terms of price. I've also heard a lot about Golden Valley Poultry but I have a feeling they're going to be expensive (£20+ for a hybrid) as they don't have prices on their site. scarlettohara
I paid £18 for my golden type hybrids and amberlink and £25 for my bluebelles - the bluebelles are really lovely birds though and have laid everyday
lheurebleue
Thank you for the info scarlettohara. I'd love a bluebelle but I've heard they are one of the bigger hybrids? I'm worried the coop I've bought will just about fit the four hens I have in mind so I'm not sure squeezing a bluebelle in there too would be the best idea. Burtie14
Thanks guys, much appreciated! Can't wait to go out and start meeting some chicks. Mummyhen - Tony has delivered the goods! We're putting it together ourselves on Saturday, so I'll circulate some pics of the finished article. I'm pretty gutted that I didn't take the whole day off now as I'm itching to get it started! helsbels
I used Southmead for my original brownies - Tracey is excellent and very helpful and the set up is lovely and really clean. Last year I also got three from Golden Valley - they were more expensive but they have grown into beautiful birds - one of which is hopefully going to be a mummy in three weeks !!!!! Have fun
